Freedom or Free Will?

1 min

What is the difference between freedom and free will? Does it exist? Or are they the same? Although often used as synonyms, they are not exactly the same:

What is it?

Freedom

It is the possibility to act in the absence of coercion or external restrictions; according to one’s own will, without external forces (such as oppression, the law, prison, etc.) preventing it. Example:

  • A person in a democratic country has the freedom to vote, while an incarcerated person has their freedom of movement restricted.

Free Will

It is the capacity to truly choose between different options; according to one’s own will, without external forces (such as oppression, the law, prison, etc.) preventing it.

  • A person in a democratic country has the free will to vote for candidate A, while a person in a dictatorship is forced to vote for candidate A.

What is the difference?

Freedom is an external condition, while free will is an internal capacity. I can have the freedom to go out to the street, but I decide whether to go out or not.

But all this makes no sense if we don’t have free will, since despite freedom, our decisions would not be our choice, but conditioned by the environment. So let’s ask the question: Does Free Will exist?
